Sophomore Spring was the semester I looked forward to ever since I visited WashU when I was a high school student. The eco unit. For this semester we started our taking care of a plant of our choice and developing a planter adapted to care for our chosen plant.
I chose ivy, a relatively easy to care for plant that I knew I could have fun with. For my eco-unit I created a modular system of laser cut sticks that allows the user to build a sculpture for their plant to grow on. By creating a modular and easily produced system my thinking was that anyone could download the files for this trellis and craft it themselves.
Following the plants, we were then tasked with developing a bath house/greenhouse combo in the Soulard neighborhood in St. Louis. We first approached this by exploring various volume studies with a limited material palette. I chose plaster, scrap wood, and clear acrylic. Utilizing the scrap wood from the wood shop down the hall was an economical way to build my model but also gave me fun challenges when I would run into funky shapes or interesting graphic elements on the wood. My final model almost kept within these exact constraints, but I had to laser cut a few elements.
