Community and Communications

Project type

Visual Design + Branding + Communications

Year

2022-2024

Location

IBM Design Program Office

During my time on the IBM Design Community and Communications team I had the opportunity to work with a wide array of senior leadership across IBM. The team's main focus was to support our GM and VP of Design (GMs: Phil Gilbert and Katrina Alcorn; VPs: Doug Powell and Joni Saylor) and our current head of IBM Software, Justin Youngblood. This support manifested in a variety of design outcomes. One day we could be working on a deck for external use telling the story of IBM Design, another day we could be crafting social graphics to promote events, and on occasion I'd find myself working on editorial design and layout for publications meant to reach out nearly 3000 IBM Designers across the globe.

You'll find a few different themes and flavors of the work I've done on this team over the years. I've roughly got it set up in order from newest to oldest so you can see where we are sitting now and what we have explored in terms of our brand and identity over the last few years. Our mission and focus ebbs and flows a bit depending on who is steering the ship, but the goal is always the same: how do we best support, uplift, celebrate, and enable our designers.

Some of the more focused missions I helped support through my work included Patterns (our internship and early-career development program), Accessibility, Racial Equity in Design, Service Design, and more. Getting to collaborate across so many teams and initiatives at IBM was an exciting role. I learned a lot of project management skills having to juggle the disparate work streams and I was able to rub elbows with our senior leadership teams and drive impact in ways I didn't think were possible at this stage in my career.
