Security and Compliance Center
IBM Cloud Security and Compliance Center (SCC) was a brand new addition to the IBM Cloud platform and launched publically in August 2020, following the June 2020 acquisition of Spanugo. SCC was not just viewed as a competitive advantage, but an essential for Financial Services Cloud success. Achieving continuous security within a cloud environment is key to protecting customer and application data. Historically, that process has been difficult and manual, which placed the organization at risk.
The primary goal of SCC is to allow users to integrate automatic security checks into everyday workflows. Seems simple enough, right? Right! Security and Compliance Center is comprised of three different components: Posture Management, Configuration Governance, and Security Insights. To bring all of these under one umbrella for users was not an easy task—but it was a fun challenge. I had to work with a new acquisition for the first two components and also pull in the existing Security Insights to be integrated under one umbrella. The Spanugo integration was an extremely laborious task as it involved retrofitting a new product with different UI patterns, architecture, and terminology into IBM Cloud's framework.
Tackling these tasks required an immense amount of coordination with both the Product Managers and Engineering team. Often I would be developing mockups, prototypes, storyboards, and presentations to communicate design concepts utilizing the IBM Design Language and Carbon Design System as well as the IBM Cloud Pattern and Asset Library (CloudPAL). When working with other designers, we were limited to virtual collaboration due to the pandemic.
I was personally responsible for a variety of aspects within the product including (but not limited to): Dashboard, Launch Page, Notifications, Global Settings, Scope / Profile / Goal Creation, Scan Scheduling, Findings, Pricing/Plan Information, and Partner Integrations. Some of the tools I used were Sketch, InVision, Mural, Keynote, Adobe Creative Suite.
Additionally, I often collaborated with the UX Research team to better understand our various users and competitors to gain an edge in the market and create the best possible experience. With the Engineering team I would spend a great deal of time building a deeper understanding of the backend limitations of the software, making sure designs were built following the correct design specs, and helping massage and improve the IA of the product.
The Spanugo integration was done in a matter of weeks for initial launch and in the short months that followed, it became fully IBM Carbon and CloudPAL compliant. From that point I continued to iterate on designs and collaborate with my cross-functional team as we further improved the product, planned for the months (and years) ahead, and maintained a competitive edge through external and internal research with our users.
For my work on IBM Cloud I also received two awards: the Selectric Award for my contributions to the IBM Cloud Design Team and an Operational Technical Achievement Award for my contributions to Security and Compliance Center.
